Poynter Teachapalooza 2014

I’m lucky enough to travel around to numerous conferences and workshops during the year for journalists and educators, but Poynter’s Teachapalooza is always a highlight. It has the right combination of inspiration and practical learning we can use in our classroom right away.  I shared my tips for teaching video and was asked to do an encore presentation the next day for those who couldn’t make it the first time.

You can read more about the highlights from UMass Professor Steve Fox here, as he breaks down 10 Lessons from Teachapalooza for EdShift.  Teach It!

(Thanks Al Tompkins for sharing the photos.)

And the Emmy goes to….

It was an honor to be nominated for an Emmy for a piece I did for American Journalism Review. I attended the event with many of my ViewFinder Spring ’14 students who won student Emmy’s in all six categories they entered.  Five of the awards were for team projects and Amanda Salvucci won for her “The Other Games: Underwater Hockey” piece.  Emily Schweich Merrill College ’16 was awarded a NATAS scholarship.  Morgan Gilliam Merrill College ’13 won an Emmy for her work at NewsChannel 8.  She was part of my first class of masters students.  Overall, another great night with my current and former Merrill College students.

White House News Photographers Association 2014 “Eyes of History” Gala

The “Eyes of History” gala was even more fun this year as I shared the experience with 10 of my University of Maryland students.  Alanna Delfino ’15 and Terrence Woods ’13 were honored during the new student video contest and the rest were volunteers at the black tie event. A story I did for American Journalism Review going inside WTOP’s Traffic Department also placed in the professional contest.
